Core Components
Academic Monitoring
Every week, EYP members' school and academic behavior performance will be monitored though the EYP Academic Monitoring Form (AMF). Each member will be assigned a teacher or graduate student who will communicate and complete AMF's with members' teachers and will report concerns to the director, Dr. Bailey. Monitors are also available to attend parent-teacher conferences.
Community Service
EYP members will participate in community service projects to encourage leadership and community involvement. Past projects have included landscaping at Cedar Shoals High School and participation in the Early Head Start Literacy Initiative. Our goal is to help members increase their ability to connect with the community.
Mandatory Saturday Academy
Throughout the school year, Saturday Academy is held on the University of Georgia's campus in Aderhold Hall. The purpose of Saturday Academy is to help EYP members succeed in their core classes, so they will be better prepared for advanced level classes. The academy gives students academic support and individual tutoring from certified teachers and graduate students. Our goal is to prepare all EYP members for college following their high school graduation.
Parents of Empowered Youth
We believe that our program's success is increased by parental support. Parents of EYP members are encouraged to attend monthly Parents of Empowered Youth (PEY) meetings & workshops and participate in decision-making to create EYP policies. PEY & EYP staff members work together to support the development EYP members' academic and social skills. Parents are required to schedule regular parent-teacher conferences to keep track of their member's school performance. The EYP Academic Monitors or Dr. Bailey can attend conferences as well.
Fall & Spring Intercession
Students who have not met academic & behavioral goals during the semester may be required to complete the intercession program. Parents may also enroll their EYP member in the intercession program. During intersession, members will complete school work, volunteer in community service projects, or participate in other work assigned by the director, Dr. Bailey and parents.
Summer Academy
Summer Academy is a week-long program that meets for 5 days and ends with a 3 day camping trip. Activities include academics, tutoring, field trips, problem-solving, team-building exercises, increasing communication skills, decision-making and meeting special guests & EYP alumni.
